Members of the project have ancestors and interests in some of Manchesters Churches, some of us have visited where Church Graveyards were once situated or are still in existence. We have listed a few here to give a little information about them.

St George, Hulme

St George Anglican Church, Chester Road, Hulme .
The land was generously given by William Egerton., M.P. Tatton Park, Cheshire.
An early Gothic Revival church by Francis Goodwin, the Church dedicated to St George was erected by commissioners appointed by Parliment.

Thursday 7th September 1826 the unfavaroble weather did not deter persons assembled to witness the officers and principal inhabitants of the township, proceed in the morining to the Colligate Church walking in procession to join a procession with the Right Rev. C. J. Blomfield D.D. Lord Bishop of Chester, Clergy, boroughreeve and constables. The whole Cortege flanked and attended in an extraordinary way by Dragoons with Swords drawn, Arrived at the ground, there a foundation stone was laid by the Bishop. With the usual formalities, a number of coins and a plate with an inscription placed beneath it.

Tuesday 9th December 1828, a cold, unsettled and showery morning, the Church filled by 11am for the commencement of concrecration. The Artillery Corps and King's dragoon Guards marched to the Church to the sound of the bugle, on arriving they occupied part of each aisle. As there was no organ yet, the chanting and singing was conducted by the Choirsters of Collegiate Church assisted by female children dressed in white from the Sunday School, who sat behind the Choirsters. The Rev. Dr. Smith, dressed in his full canonicals, officated on the occassion as Chaplin to the Bishop of Chester, The Right Rev. Dr Sumner. His Lordship commenced the ceremony of Consecration by proceeding down the aisle of the Church, pronouncing the episcopal benediction.

St George's Chruch Hulme Manchester

Plate Inscription:
Upon a plot of land, generously given by William Egerton, Esq., M.P. Tatton Park, Cheshire, the first stone of this church, dedicated to St. George, errected by the commissioners appointed by Parliament, was laid by the Right Reverend C.J. Blomfield, D.D. Lord Bishop of Chester, attended by Rich. Holt and Jas. Rose, constables and Michael Holt and Paul Chappe, overseers, on Thursday 7th September, in the 7th year of September, in the 7th year of the reign of his Majesty George the IV, MDCCXXVI. Francis Goodwin, Architect.

Gravestones removed 1930 and the burial remains were moved to Southern Cemetery.
